Abstract:

Sonker is a centuries-old dessert and tradition in Surry County, North Carolina. The dessert usually consists of cooked fruit and a crust, and is prepared in various ways depending upon family tradition. The heritage food dish is highlighted by the Surry Sonker Trail and Sonker Festival in Mount Airy.
