Abstract:

The beautiful trees that line Fifth Street in Greenville were planted between 1920 and 1929, providing one of the most scenic drives in the city. Trees have a stately beauty, which is a distinct asset to the appearance and economic value of a community. Unfortunately, age, cramped spaces, and toxins added from increased traffic and development, are killing the trees. Every large wind that blows through has taken out more and more trees. The author gives a history of the struggle Greenville has had keeping trees as a part of the town landscape.
