Once Prosperous Village Now Ghost Town

Record #:
20763
Abstract:
The town of Ayr was located on Cove Creek in Rutherford County. Today only one structure remains as proof of the existence of the town supported by a tannery industry. The business moved out of Rutherfordton to the creek after the Civil War and Frank Reynolds of Ayr, Scotland was hired to manage it. A year later, he purchased the tannery and set about building up the business and the town. When the tan bark supply was exhausted, the inhabitants lost their source of livelihood and moved away, leaving a \"ghost town\" behind them.
