Industrial and Agricultural Development of Columbus County

Record #:
Columbus County, the state's third largest county, was formed in 1808 with the county seat at Whiteville. Agriculture has long been the economic mainstay, with farmers grossing over $22 million in 1943. The turpentine industry was big but declined after 1875, to be replaced by sawmilling which remains one of the county's chief sources of livelihood. Although the county is rich in minerals, mining has never been profitable.
