Abstract:
Myers recounts the history of Badin, located in Stanly County. It began with an English engineer's idea to build dams on the Yadkin River to generate power. Seven years later the project went bankrupt, and the French took over. When WWI broke out, the French went home to fight. ALCOA bought the project and ran it for the next one hundred years, becoming Badin's major employer with its aluminum plant. The plant closed in 2010, but the four dams continue to generate power for the area.
