Abstract:

One of the state's earliest bridges was constructed near Hertford in the 1780s. Citizens of the town wished to cross the Perquimans River to visit Elizabeth City and Virginia destinations. The man hired for the job was Mr. Perry who traversed the river that was 20 feet deep and 600 feet wide with old whiskey barrels lashed together. A more modern bridge replaced the whiskey barrels in 1885 and finally a steel and concrete bridge was erected in 1928.
