Abstract:
\"The Old North State Forever,\" a song that will live as long as the Old North State itself is cherished even by those who find it a difficult tune to carry. William Gaston, author of the song, lost his father while escaping from New Bern during the American Revolution, and later studied law at Princeton. Gaston is said to have created the state song after hearing sneering remarks made by an outsider concerning North Carolina.
