Abstract:
The Park Services estimates that there are 500 to 600 bears in all the Smokies, which is an average of about one per thousand acres of parkland. All are black bears, which is the only species in North Carolina. They fall into three categories: the semi-tame \"smoochers\", the \"thieves\", and the truly wild.
