Abstract:

What began with the donation of an 18th century building in 1966 has burgeoned into a unique three million dollar project of \"adaptive restoration\" in historic Murfreesboro. The city, located on the head of the navigation for the Meherrin River, was a King's Landing as early as 1740 and for many years thereafter experienced a brisk trade between northern colonies, the West Indies, and Europe. When Edwin P. Brown sought to donate the 1790 William Rea store in 1966, the then inactive Murfree Historical Association was revamped into The Murfreesboro Historical Association, Inc., a non-profit educational organization for the preservation and restoration of 18th and 19th century properties in and near historic Murfreesboro.
