David C. Edmisten is vice president of Texasgulf’s Agricultural Chemicals Division in Raleigh. This article discusses Edmisten’s background in chemical engineering, and operations of the company. Texasgulf is mining phosphate rock at Lee Creek in Aurora for the development of fertilizer.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the fiftieth anniversary of the North Carolina Art Society. This article discusses the history of the art museum and the society. Several of the museums fine art collections, including the Robert F. Pfifer Collection, are also highlighted.

North Carolina’s billion-dollar insurance industry has a greater economic impact than most other industries, yet the state currently offers a poor climate in which to operate an insurance business. This article discusses regulatory problems and other obstacles facing the industry.

Higher costs of processing checks and labor can force increases in bank service charges. To reduce these costs, banks are turning to electronic deposit of payroll checks offered by the Automatic Clearing House. North Carolina’s Automated Clearing House opened in the Charlotte office of The Federal Reserve Bank on July 6.
