Total revenue and funds availability for the North Carolina General Fund amounted to over $307 million for 1958. Expenditures for the state during this time period, for public safety, welfare, education and others, only amounted to over $277 million. This left the state with a balance of $29, 347, 993. Although there was a surplus in the budget, there were no material changes to the proportions of total revenue raised from the ten major sources including individual and corporate income and sales, franchise, license, insurance, inheritance, and beverage taxes.

The Committee on Improving and Expediting the Administration of Justice in North Carolina presented a survey of the state's judicial system to the North Carolina Bar Association. In a program designed to improve North Carolina's courts in order to meet the changing needs of the state, amendments to the state constitution aim to unify the system, face issues with justice of the peace, jury selection, and the addition of courts and judges.

Big rocks are famous in North Carolina, and they draw tourists to their spectacular views on some of the highest mountains in the eastern United States. Hanging Rock, Blowing Rock, Chimney Rock, and the Devil's Courthouse are just a few of the peaks that North Carolina offers for hiking, landscape gazing, and other outdoor activities.

Just off the scenic motor routes, North Carolina's mountains offer hiking up some of the tallest peaks in the eastern United States. Over 1000 miles of marked trails for amateurs to the professional lead through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests, even connecting the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia.
