Abstract:
A small statue in the living room of a small private boarding house in Taylorsville commemorates Sergeant Ed Halyburton, the first American solider captured by the Germans during World War I. Halyburton, although seeing practically no active service, organized the American prisoners in German prison camps, keeping up their morale in the face of terrific hardship and slow death by exposure and starvation.
