Abstract:
The Cowee Valley, located in Macon County, is a productive zone for ruby hunters. At least nine mines are currently open in the region, drawing in tourists and locals interested in the pursuit of rubies. Large gems have been found, weighing between three and four carats and on par in quality with stones found in the world's premier ruby zone, Burma.

Abstract:
Lillington, North Carolina native, Margaret Baggett Dolan, is the only Southerner ever to be named President of the American Nurses Association. Elected in 1962, Dolan is the head of the Department of Public Health Nursing at the University of North Carolina's School of Public Health and a member of President Kennedy's Advisory Committee on Health resources.
