The third article in a three part series on North Carolina soldiers during the Battle of Gettysburg, Wellman concludes with North Carolina's contribution on the third day of the battle. Abstract:
Bill Sharpe explains the meaning and history of the famous nickname for North Carolinians, \r\n'Tar Heel'. Sharpe claims that prior to the Civil War, people who lived by the Virginia-North Carolina border employed patrolmen to keep slaves from crossing state lines. Each state enforced a penalty on slaves caught escaping. In North Carolina this penalty was to tar the heels of the slave, hence the name, 'Tar Heel'.\r\n

Demand is growing for imposing more financial responsibility on North Carolina automobile drivers. Expected to be considered by the 1953 legislature are a Uniform Individual Accident and Sickness Policy Provisions law, a proposal to eliminate the present restrictions of 25 people required for constituting group policies, a proposal to make policies automobile policies gradually non-cancellable, and a proposal to allow a blanket policy to cover all dependents in a family.
