Each of these women gained their reputations for being pirates in an age when women were rarely onboard ships, let alone active, ruthless individuals. The author provides a brief biographical sketch of each lady and her career on the high seas.

Abstract:
This article about Carteret County focuses heavily on its maritime tradition, since much of the county is near water. Most attention is taken up by Morehead City and Beaufort because these are the two largest cities in Carteret County. Other points of interest are the rich Native American history of the county and links to the Civil War at Fort Macon.

Abstract:
Western North Carolina proved a rough country in the late 18th Century. In this article, the story of Samuel Davidson is told. He attempted to settle the area beyond the Blue Ridge in 1784. Unfortunately he met his demise after he encountered a band of Cherokee Indians. A year later the first permanent settlements would take hold in that area.
