Abstract:
This article offers a brief history of the modernization of roads in North Carolina. The initiative began in Mecklenburg County and continued throughout the state. Further discussion focuses on statistical information about the cost of paved roads.

Rocky Mount, at the time of this article, had the oldest operational cotton mill in the South. Discussed is the founding of the mill, its survival through the Civil War, and the modernization throughout the late 19th century into the early 20th century.

Abstract:
The article is a reprinted excerpt from an out of print book. Bishop Joseph Blount Cheshire compiled a series of stories and published them under the title \"Nonnulla.\" The story concerns a young woman on trial for the death of her newborn and faces conviction when heartfelt testimony given by a family member changes the outcome.
