Abstract:
The author presents a short piece on a pleasure craft from Baltimore sailing along the East Coast. The Levin J. Marvel was a 3-mast lumber schooner converted into a passenger vessel. It carried 12 passengers from Maryland to Florida in 1945. Marvel traveled along North Carolina's coast with detailed commentary about navigation difficulties.

Abstract:
The year 1921 is recorded as the year that public sentiment toward turning the highways over to the state changed rather than continuing it as a county-and-town function. Griffin recounts the hard work that went toward bringing the highway system up to its present high standard.
