Abstract:
Gardner-Webb College was a junior college located in the town King's Mountain. The institution began as Boiling Springs High School which through time became a Baptist organized junior college by the same name. Close to financial foreclosure, the college remained open because Judge Yates Webb, on the Board of Trustees for Wake Forest, and Governor Oliver Max Gardner contributed funds and thus was renamed for its benefactors.

Abstract:
Immigrants settled Wilmington in 1730 and called it New Liverpool or Newton. In 1739 the city was incorporated and officially named Wilmington. Situated on a fresh-water harbor and near the Cape Fear River, Wilmington's maritime industry was always at the forefront. Shipbuilding and maritime trade accounted for the city's historic prosperity. Historically, ships from Wilmington engaged in naval encounters and privateering during the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War.

Abstract:
1940s Pasquotank County experienced and influx of military personal and wartime industry. Elizabeth City location on the Pasquotank River made it the hub of military activity and the only sizeable town in the entire county. A Coast Guard Air Station accommodated both land and water planes. The Naval Air Station launched dirigibles which patrolled Atlantic waters. The city's shipyard was sequestered to build tugs for the Navy. Such a large population influx forced the city to develop housing projects like the Enfield Apartments to accommodate its new population. During peaceful times, agriculture dominated Pasquotank County economics with the local population depending on livestock and produce for income.

Abstract:
One of the most unusual town names in the state is Democrat, located in Buncombe County on the Big Ivy River. It's a rural community with a few churches, a post office, a filling station, a country store, and several dozen dwellings. The Carter Mill, built in 1800 by Solomon Carter, is still in operation and still family-owned.
