He was a patriot and champion of independence from English oppression, as well as a member of the General Assembly, Clerk of Court for the Edenton District, Deputy Naval Officer for the Province, a member of the committee on Continental Correspondence, and a delegate to Congress.

Mr. Charles W. Tillett, or Gladys Avery, has recently been elected assistant chairman of the Democratic National Committee for the second time. Tillett is also the organizer of the first county League of Women Voters in North Carolina.
