The establishment of Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Base had an intense impact on a rural area. In order to solve development problems, commanding officers and Carteret and Craven counties secured a special act authorizing the creation of a Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station Zoning Commission to set up zoning regulations for the area. Unfortunately, this has led to a number of jurisdictional problems and has been grounds for several court cases.
