Beech Mountain was the home of Ray Hicks who is considered the patriarch of traditional Southern Appalachian storytelling. Hicks won many awards and is known internationally for his oral storytelling.

The ACC Men’s basketball tournament stands as a cultural event in North Carolina and has found its way into school culture. Some teachers take this opportunity to teach life lessons such as respect and sportsmanship and math lessons to students.
