The North Carolina mountains cover an area of 6,000 square miles and contain the highest peaks east of the Mississippi River. They are also the site of spectacular autumn leaf displays. Each year tourists flock to such areas as Flat Rock and Cumberland Knob to view them.

David McRae's decision to enter the field of physical therapy was influenced by a bout with polio he contracted when he was four years old. In 1976, he came to Greenville, North Carolina, to set up the rehabilitation department in the soon-to-open Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Since 1989, he has been the hospital's CEO.

The Firm Award, established in 1998 by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, recognizes state firms creating outstanding architecture over a ten-year period. O'Brien/Atkins Associates, P.A., based in the Research Triangle Park, is the inaugural award winner.
