This article examines the conflict between those who advocate the large and enlarging power of the federal government, and those who support States' rights and a close conformity to the letter of the constitution. This article is a reprint of letters from North Carolinians to Andrew Jackson written between October 31, 1795 and February 1, 1843. The author's introduction addresses the source of the letters in the Library of Congress. The letters presented here are from William Cupples, William Polk, John Branch, Joseph H. Bryan, Thomas D. Davis, Calvin Jones, Robert Love, Joseph B. Hinton, John H. Benton, John C. Eringhaus, Isaac P. Freeman, William H. Haywood, Jr., John H. Wheeler, Robert Strange. One letter includes the draft of a bill on the subject of the annexation of Texas.
