Butner is under consideration by the Department of Homeland Security as a location for its new Bio- and Agro- Defense Facility. The town is one of six national finalists, and a decision will be made by the end of the year. The $524 million complex would study livestock diseases that could threaten agriculture, food supply and public health.

Harris discusses the boatbuilding industry in North Carolina. The large majority of the one hundred and thirteen boat builders in the state are small operations. There are twelve companies that employ over one hundred, and the largest, Hatteras Yachts in New Bern, employs over one thousand four hundred. Boats are distributed locally, nationally, and around the world.

Fibrowatt, a Pennsylvania-based energy company, plans to open three poultry waste power plants in North Carolina. Two of the sites will be located in Sampson and Surry counties, and the third to be chosen from either Moore, Montgomery, or Stanly Counties. The plants will provide a way to turn poultry waste into a clean source of renewable energy.
