In this second in a series of three stories on environmental justice issues in North Carolina, Cowell examines the old Chatham County landfill, built in 1973 and closed by federal regulators in 1993, and its effects on the Alston Road community. The dump has leaked cancer-causing contaminants into residents' drinking water wells and at times has exceeded the limits for explosive methane gas.
