The Kornegay family has five of their seven children who are ECU graduates, with four sons following their father, Hervy Kornegay, Sr., a 1957 graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine, into the medical field. The sons, Hervy, Jr., Chad, Todd, and Jon are all graduates of the ECU Brody School of Medicine and all four followed the school's primary mission--\"to increase the supply of primary care physicians to serve the people of Eastern NC.\"

Dr. Heather Harris Wright’s lab is dedicated to improving communication for patients who have had brain injury or stroke. Wright and students work to improve written and spoken communication and cognitive abilities in adults with aphasia and other impairments.

Marilyn Sheerer has been East Carolina’s provost since 2007, and in that time has brought the university through accreditation, creation of the Honors College, and expansion of the Department of Engineering. After retiring as part of the ECU administration, Sheerer will return as a full professor in the higher education doctoral program.

Among ECU’s famous firsts was Fletcher Residence Hall, the first campus building to have elevators. The building, opening in 1964, was named for novelist Inglis Fletcher. It attained the nickname “skyscraper dorm” from being the tallest building in Northeastern North Carolina at that time. The seven story building remained the highest high-rise until its residential neighbor, ten story White Residence Hall, opened in 1968.

Alluding to a phrase still heard in the Progressive Era, NC Agricultural and Mechanical College students visited East Carolina Teachers College students. ECTC’s student body, mostly female, encouraged administration to facilitate co-ed style events that reflected progressive thinking. From that came the Sadie Hawkins Dance style visits of ECTC students to Raleigh.
