Charter boat fishing is a top tourist activity along the Outer Banks. A new Fishery Resource Grant study is looking to see what the economic impact of charter boat fishing is on the Outer Banks and surrounding areas.

Abstract:
There is some debate between federal managers and local fishermen about the abundance of spiny dogfish in around the Cape Hatteras area. ECU doctoral student Jennifer Cudney is working on a project that may settle the debate once and for all.

Abstract:
The Fishery Resource Grant is funding the construction of new oyster reefs in Hyde, Carteret, Onslow, and New Hanover Counties. The project is expected to stimulate not only the growth of new oysters, but the economy of these counties.

The Cashie River has revealed an unexpected find. A wharf and shipwreck have been found quite close to shore by resident Becky Bowling. A project to study the find is being conducted by ECU’s maritime studies program.
