This article discusses land use in North Carolina, and the challenges of balancing economic development with environmental preservation. Three bills which are currently pending in the legislature in Raleigh include the State Land Use and Classification Bill, Mountain Area Management Bill, and Coastal Area Management Bill.

Joe and Andrea Sloop restored and remodeled a vacant tin-roofed white-frame house in Zionville, North Carolina. The house was originally built by a Watauga County Civil War veteran returning home from the war. Parts of the house are made of the now rare and expensive wormy chestnut wood.

When the Cherokees were forced to relocate to Oklahoma in 1838, several hundred refused to leave and fled into the Smoky Mountains. Today there are about three-thousand Cherokees living in western North Carolina. This article discusses the history of Cherokee Nation, the Trail of Tears, and the Sacred Fire ritual.
