Students in Broderick Ward’s Electric Trade II class at Southeast Halifax High School in Halifax, North Carolina recently converted a 1989 Geo Metro into an electric car, and won a national racing competition with it. That Metro and the students from a poor and rural county are what inspired a novel that is the basis for a new Hollywood film.
The Goodness Grows in North Carolina program is sponsoring the first statewide “Best Dish in NC” contest to determine who serves the finest local fare. There are eight restaurants in the final round, and each finalist will serve and feature their entry dish at their restaurant for four weeks. A list and description of the eight restaurants and feature dishes is provided in this article.
North Carolina coastal communities were hit by Hurricane Ophelia in mid-September 2005. Although the hurricane never made landfall, rain and wind caused substantial damage and power outages.
