Nickols' Southern Lion was created off the premise of a popular marketplace venture, BlackLion, which closed after a 27 year run. Located in a 55,000 square foot facility, previously housing the first level of Sears at Carolina Place Mall in Pineville, Southern Lion is believed to be the largest 100% black-owned retail business in the southeast.

Aldersgate originally began as The Methodist Home in 1945 to serve retired preachers and widows. Viewed for many years as an upscale facility, critical financial problems in November 2022 forced the organization to discontinue a major expansion project. A correction plan is currently underway through the North Carolina Department of Insurance. The retirement complex includes Mecklenburg County's oldest home built in 1774.
