Leinwands, a 6,00 square foot department store located in Elizabethtown in Bladen County continues as a thriving business today despite a very changed retail climate that has seen the extinction of most family run small town department stores. The Leinwand family is among a number of Jewish families that arrived in the South and North Carolina in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as merchants. Ricky and Eileen Silvers Leinwand are the current third generation owners of the business.

Nationally, North Carolina is a leader in the beer brewing industry. The state has more than 320 breweries and brewpubs with a $2.8 Billion economic impact. Discussed are Charlotte's Wooden Robot Brewery, Sierra Nevada in Henderson County and Birdsong Brewing in Charlotte for their various work with solar and other green initiatives.

Curt Locklear started Robeson County's Pembroke Hardware in the 1950s and built it into one of the larger True Value hardware stores in the U.S., a status it still maintains. Grandson, Aaron Thomas, now 45 is sole owner and CEO of construction company Metcom. The company is expected to reach $150 million revenue in 2021. no other minority owned company in the state has reached a similar level.
