The Piedmont Triad has a long history of manufacturing--tobacco, furniture, and textiles. Now some newer industries are joining in--aviation, health care, technology, and higher education. BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA assembled a staff of experts to discuss how the region's economy and its residents are being affected by these newer additions.

Abstract:
An economic incentive package put together by state and local officials will bring Strum, Ruger & Company, a gun-making industry, to Mayodan, in Rockingham County. The company is inventing $26 million to turn a former mill into a firearms plant which will bring 473 jobs to the county by 2017.

Abstract:
Based in China, Lenovo Group, Ltd. is the world's largest computer manufacturer. In January 2013, the company opened a production line in Whitsett, located between Greensboro and Burlington. There, 115 employees make Think desktops and laptops for the American and Canadian markets. Hodges also lists other American changes Lenovo is making, such as relocating a customer service center from India to Raleigh.
