The author notes the state of affairs for Edgecombe and its seat of government. The newspaper, The Tarboro Southerner was then published every Friday. Fred Phillips was mayor of Tarboro and Joseph Cobb, sheriff of Edgecombe. James H. Bell was a jeweler and watchmaker in the town. A popular hardware store was operated by a former Confederate general, William Gaston Lewis.

The new book, "Dr. Milton D. Quigless, Sr. Story: A Memoir of Race, Medicine, and Purpose in the Segregated South" is essentially the same as an earlier edition published in 2009 and titled "Looking Back - The Way Things Were, The Autobiography of Dr, Milton D. Quigless". Quigless originally came to Rocky Mount to practice but was referred by Dr. Avon there to a post in Tarboro. his Story is interesting as fifth grade dropout, entertainer, Pullman porter and finally medical student and practicing African American physician during the Great Depression.

Author Monika Fleming talks about winter storms for Tarboro in more recent memory. Included are the 1967 spring Blizzard, the March 1980 storm and most destructive, the Dec. 9, 1989 ice storm. Major storms were recorded in January 2009 and January 2010.

In 1905, Edgecombe was divided into 14 townships with a population of around 26,600 people. The county seat, Tarboro had a population of 3,800. The county had access to two hospitals, Pittman Sanatorium and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Hospital.

This article reviews some significant past winter storm events in the town of Tarboro. Earliest notation is the winter of 1848. The winters of 1856 and 1857 were particularly active. In January 1857, it was reported that the Tar River had frozen over. With some successive snow falls , the thermometer eventually reached 5 below zero. Most notorious was the 1927 blizzard that stopped all forms of traffic, including, railroad trains from the Norfolk area.
