Between 1943 and 1962, wages in North Carolina have gone up considerably, as well as the number of people employed. In 1943, the total payroll was over $806 million, but in 1962 the payroll was well over $3 billion. Additionally, due to the increase in employs in the state, more taxes paid by employers are added to the state tax reserve for unemployment benefits.

A milestone was marked in the increasing efforts of North Carolina to meet growing demands for forest tree seedlings. The Little River Nursery near Goldsboro, North Carolina was dedicated in November. It contains 100 acres, the largest of the three state managed tree nurseries. The nurseries, which are grown and managed to aid wood-using industries, represent part of the $741 million value of tree growing in the state.

State funds reaching over $108 million were paid in 1956-1967 for the salaries of 33,438 teachers, principles, and supervisors. There were 892 more instructional personnel paid that in the previous year, and the average classroom teacher received an average salary of $3,131.74. The North Carolina General Assembly was also able to set a pay schedule for teachers and principles related to educational degrees and number of teachers overseen, while retirement laws increased the minimum benefits for teachers, similar to other state employees.

A half century ago, North Carolina made its first systematic registration of motor vehicles, instructing drivers to make their own license plate with an assigned set of numbers. Now, the manufacture of 1960 plates will have a uniform color scheme of black on yellow and display 'drive safely.' The plates will be distributed from 80 branch offices, after being pressed and printed through the prison system.
