Angela Stadler, municipal clerk for Reidsville, is the recipient of the N.C. Association of Municipal Clerks' inaugural Clerk of the Year Award. The award honors a clerk who has demonstrated extraordinary job performance, commitment to professional development and to community involvement, positive on-the-job attitude, and who has brought innovative ideas to their cities and towns.

Gastonia won the prestigious National Civic League's All America City & Community Award for 2010. The award is given to communities that identify problems and solve them. Only ten awards are presented nationwide. Gastonia first won the award in 1963 and again in 2000.

The Preserve America Community Program \"is a federal effort to encourage and support preservation and enjoyment of America's cultural and natural heritage.\" Twenty-nine communities across the nation received the award this year. Five of them were from North Carolina: Asheboro, Hendersonville, Hillsborough, Waxhaw, and Transylvania County.

Forty years ago, William S. Powell published the North Carolina Gazetteer, a listing of about 19,000 place names in the state. Recently Michael Hill, research supervisor at the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, was assigned the task of updating the book by adding 2,000 more entries. The second edition was released in 2010.

Abstract:
The Municipal Administration course is offered by the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to municipal managers, department heads, and other officials. At the close of instruction, class members vote anonymously for the student who best meets the criteria for the George Franklin Award. Franklin was a former counsel for the N.C. League of Municipalities. Stevie Cox, Toen Manager for Chadbourn, received the award in 2010. Blair Barton-Percival, assistant director of the Area Agency on Aging for the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments, received the Edwin M. Gill Award.

In December 2010, Charlotte Council Member James E. Mitchell, Jr. was sworn in as president of the National League of Cities for 2010-2011. He is the first North Carolina municipal official to lead the organization since former Scotland Neck mayor Ferd Harrison served as president nearly thirty years ago.
