Before the lifesaving stations were manned fulltime in 1905, they operated on an active season and inactive season. Active meant fulltime operation between September 1 and May 1, and inactive meant the summer months when only the keeper was on duty. This article describes station activities for every day of the week; a beach apparatus drill by the keeper and seven surfmen; beach patrols and tower watches; equipment used for rescues; and surfboats.

Abstract:
In this SEA CHEST interview, Lloyd Styron discusses baseball on Hatteras Island. The first time he played the game was in 1914, and the first game he ever saw was between a team from Washington, North Carolina, and the Hatteras team. The visiting team came by boat. Baseball was played in the morning by boys aged 9-13; the 14-17- year-olds played until mid-afternoon; and the men played until dark. Styron recounts some of the games he played, other players, and players who went on to play major league baseball.

Weather observations have been taken on Hatteras Island since 1874. Much of the information on this period is contained in the weather station's log books, which are housed at the Cape Hatteras Weather Service. The books contain material on weather, shipwrecks, and local happenings. THE SEA CHEST staff compiled entries from 1874 and 1875 to give the reader a feel for what life at a weather station was like.

Abstract:
High winds and tides had worn down the terrain, but human activities had played a great part in the erosion of sand dunes and beaches. Having some control over the latter spurred residents to plan ways to preserve the sandy shores of their island home. Among the efforts: prohibiting vehicles without four weight bearing wheels on beaches; increasing parking spaces to incite pedestrian beach access; and closing certain areas seasonally and year around.

Before 1960, fires on the Hatteras Island were attended to by concerned villagers who would save what they could. But the people realized that there needed to be something else they could do. With the help of some regional fire chiefs and money raised by the community, a fire house and engine were finally on the Island. Now the fire department consists of 50-60 well-trained fire fighters and five pieces of fire fighting apparatus from the villages of Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras.

Abstract:
If asked to identify visionaries for flight, one might consider the Wright Brothers. Someone else with maven status for advocating airplanes, but perhaps not so well known was General Billy Mitchell. Largely unpopular during his time, Mitchell’s assertion of combining aircraft and naval operations gradually gained support through the efforts of the then Secretary of the Navy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Times had changed, as indicated in the girls’ age range, 18-28, and a marital status for some. A sign of changed times was also evident in chaperones needed if males visited. Timeless values could be seen in purposes for a club with an overnight stay option: rest, reading, and recreation.

Glimpses of the past were perhaps seen most clearly in this collection of photos. One was a reminder of when the ferry was the only source of transport for humans and cargo. Others were reminders of businesses long since gone out of business, as well as buildings still standing. Most the photos, though, attested the importance of waterways around the Island, whether the creek familiarly known as the “Slash,” Core Sound, or Atlantic Ocean.

Outer Banks residents might be expected to harbor a yen for hobbies signifying fishing village lifeways. The author’s grandfather reflected the rule in model ship building and decoy carving. He could be seen as a model for his models, some featured in accompanying photos. His works gained recognition outside of the Banks by being published in National Geographic in the 1950s and featured in Ben Dixon MacNeill's The Hatterasman.

Before North Carolina began providing ferryboat service, residents of Hatteras Island depended on local ferryboat captains to transport them to the mainland or others islands of the Outer Banks. O'Neal and Tiedt discuss these early ferries and their captains, including Frazier Peele.

Maurice L. Burrus, born in Hatters is 1898, first played baseball while attending Elizabeth City High School. He later moved on to Oak Ridge Preparatory, Furman University, and then North Carolina State, where he played baseball while working on textile engineering. In 1919, when Burrus left college he built up a reputation as a professional batter and was later brought up to the National League Club in Philadelphia. With improved fielding, Burrus was the Boston Brave's regular first baseman by 1925. Although he only played 10 years of professional baseball, Burrus was Dare County's first major league baseball player.

“A picture is worth a thousand words” comes to life nine-fold in these photos taken in Buxton. The time frame covered ranged from the reign of the model A to the prevalence of cars offering four-wheel drive. Scenic views were of forests, the lighthouse, and local homes. Activities mentioned for then and now noted the enduring value of family reunions and baseball.

Clifford Wade was born on Hatteras Island on November 14, 1882 and at present is the island's oldest resident. At the age of twelve he went to work pound net fishing and later worked in the Lightship Service. Wade describes his experiences in the Great August Storm of 1899 and watching General Billy Mitchell sink two battleships with air power off Hatteras Island in 1923.
