On Jan. 16, 1905, the 18th month old child of W. J. Briley while unobserved stuck a broom in the fire and in playing with it its clothing caught fire and burned to death. The child lived about five hours after the accident.

The letter dated June 16, 1845, is from Jordan Nelson at Linton, Marengo Co., AL, to his family in Pitt County, care of the Washington, NC post office. Nelson and Mr. Satterthwaite had gone to Alabama to sell negro slaves. Nelson mentions a sister-in-law that lived near Linden, AL.
