This a collected history of Crown Point Lodge, supposed first Masonic lodge in North Carolina. It was located in the home and inn of Col. Shadrach Allen, on Turkey Cock Swamp, Pitt County, NC. James Hanrahan related what he remembered of his grandparents home and the Lodge.

In 1878, John and Jacob Briley, brothers, who lived about four miles north of the Tar River, were attacked and robbed on the road on the north side of the Tar River bridge. John Briley died and Jacob was expected to die. Three black men, Reuben Harris, John Mayo and Frank Bell, were arrested on suspicion of committing the assault.

In Nov. 1879, W. B. Paramour (Paramore), was arrested for burning his own store in a building owned by Miss Eveline Nelson in Chicod twsp., Pitt County. It was thought he burned it to allay suspicion on him for burning Mr. J. J. Laughinghouse’s property. Paramore was also arrested for hiring John Campbell to put strychnine in Mr. Laughinghouse’s well. Upon giving a mortgage on $6,000 worth of property to make his appearance at next court, Paramore was released.

In 1928, the Daily Reflector newspaper in Greenville, NC, ran a series of articles submitted by Abram James Moye (1853-1932) in which he recalled the houses and people who lived along the Plank Road running down Dickinson Avenue to Farmville. There are pen & ink drawings of several houses by Roger Kammerer, including the Wiley Nobles house, Joseph L. Ballard house, Alfred Moye house, Plank Road Toll House.
