In North Carolina, 1.6 million people have criminal records, and 92 percent of employers conduct criminal background checks, leading to a 50 percent chance a person with a criminal record will not receive a chance at a job interview. These numbers are exacerbated by the fact that North Carolina is one of two states that charge 16 and 17 year olds as adults. But attorneys for Legal Aid of North Carolina are helping those overshadowed by their youth records, expunge their misdemeanor offenses, allowing them to get jobs and lease apartments.

Chatham Park is a development project for eastern Chatham County intended to a mix-use project. Currently, plans include 22,000 homes and 13 million square feet for research facilities in a 7,120 acre area east of Pittsboro, the largest project of its kind for the area. The author attended the Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meeting on August 12th and reports on feedback from citizens and board members.

The National Soccer Hall of Fame was once located in Oneonta, New York. The institution closed its doors in 2010 and the museum's collections is now stored in a Hillsborough warehouse. The author discusses the vast amount of history in storage, the history of the former soccer museum, and argues for the erection of a new facility to house soccer's artifacts dating back to the 1860s when the first American soccer match occurred.

Gavin Smith was a red-shirt freshman defensive tackle for North Carolina State University Wolfpack. He is currently serving 6-8 years in the Morrison Correctional Facility in Hoffman, NC after being convicted of raping a 17-year-old girl. His case is now being reviewed by The North Carolina Court of Appeals on the basis that the prosecutor introduced prejudicial evidence concerning another incident between Smith and a young girl. The Court will determine a ruling sometime in the next few months.

An American for Prosperity Foundation, a Koch brother funded institution, ice cream van has been parked in the Raleigh District Drive lot for approximately three months. The van appears to be abandoned but has yet to be removed by the state's Department of Transportation. The department's spokesperson Jennifer Garifo, responded that the license plate information will be recorded and owner contacted and given a reasonable amount of time to remove the politically-slanted van.
