Annotated letter from John Jacobs to Walton H. Riggs, South Mills, NC, Mar. 2, 1862. John Jacobs was a German, who with no one to care for his eleven year old son during the Civil War, had him enlist with him for war in 1861 as a musician. John Jacobs was recognized in the war for his Drum & Bugle Corps. After the war, Jacobs became a prominent businessman and organized several bands in South Mills, Elizabeth City and Edenton, NC.

Article about an eleven year old boy finding a 32 pound cannon ball at Cobb’s Point. It was a remnant of the battle from the small fort at Cobb’s Point trying to defend Elizabeth City from the Federal fleet sailing up Pasquotank River in 1863. Over the years other artifacts were found and part of the earthwork fort are still visible.
