The North Carolina Golf Panel pairs with BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA to publish rankings of the state's top one hundred golf courses. In making their choices judges considered the course's conditioning, routing, design, strategy, memorability, fairness, variety and aesthetics. As it has since the panel began in 1995, Pinehurst No. 2 held the top position.

Malt-O-Meal, Inc., founded in Minnesota in 1919, makes ten of the nation's fifty best-selling cereals. Their cereals cost less than major brands through cost-cutting techniques, such as packaging in bags instead of boxes. Major grocery chains and small town ones, like Family Dollar and Dollar General, sell the products. In September 2009, Malt-O-Meal opened a 350,000-square-foor factory in Asheboro.

The ferries Southport and Fort Fisher, which carry cars and pedestrians across the Cape Fear River, are part of the country's second-largest ferry fleet. Only the state of Washington has more ferries than North Carolina, which operates seven routes and twenty-one ferries carrying over one million vehicles and 2.5 million passengers.

Although there are ten beer makers in and around Asheville, the Highland Brewing Company is the state's oldest craft brewer dedicated solely to beer production and the largest based on total volume. Highland produces 775,000 gallons of beer a year. Oscar P. Wong and John McDermott began the company, and McDermott left in 1997 over a disagreement in strategic direction.
