Abstract:

Between the American Revolution and the middle of the 19th century, the town of Warrenton was a bright spot in the state's informal education system. Among several academies, the Warrenton Female Academy was founded in 1809 by Jacob Mordecai, an education pioneer.

Abstract:

The contributions of ministers’ wives have traditionally been downplayed by historians. Acknowledging Anna Burwell’s efforts as a minister’s wife include crediting her fulfillment of gender role duties while operating a girls’ academy to help her husband support their family.
