Abstract:
European election observers observed the voting process in the Triangle on Tuesday. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which is supported by the United Nations and of which the United States is a member, deployed the monitors. The officials noted that the election activities they witnessed in Wake County were free of voter fraud and tampering, but also complicated. They enjoyed some parts of the process, but had harsh criticisms for the impact of outside spending and our two-party system.

Abstract:
Democrats did not do well in the 2012 elections in North Carolina. The reasons for the likely Republican victories began two years ago. With the money and control of the map, Republicans easily kept control of state politics.

Abstract:
The number of Latinos registered to vote in the state has doubled since 2008 and Latinos have the potential to sway the election in North Carolina. Overall, the Latino voter bloc is young, but is not always politically engaged. Various reasons prevent participation in the election and some Latinos believe Obama has not kept his promises. Voting groups are still encouraging Latinos to vote and be involved as they will likely be the face of the state in the future according to demographic predictions.

Abstract:
A panel of three federal judges will meet to determine if North Carolina’s May 6 primary will be held. A lawsuit was recently filed asking for a delay so the courts or legislature can redraw the state’s legislative district boundaries. Redrawing the lines could allow for more Republicans to win elections and the disenfranchisement of black voters by diluting their political power.

Abstract:
The US Department of Justice sent undercover observers to monitor the polls in Alamance County. Some have speculated that observers were sent after an illegal immigrant in Alamance County was arrested for forging documents obtained through a potential leak by health care officials. Several politicians in the county also ran on anti-immigrant platforms who have raised the question of illegal voting. Observers were present to make sure there were no problems at the polls and the Voting Rights Act was observed.

Abstract:
The integrity of the recent Pittsboro town races and Chatham County’s land-transfer tax referendum are being debated. Campaign and ballot violations have been alleged by several in Chatham County and the election results protested. Political observers say that this has become typical of Chatham County, and a Superior Court judge ruled that the Chatham County Board of Elections broke the law last year. The issues at the ballot could affect the outcomes of at least one race and the status of the referendum.
