Abstract:
Originally, Tommy Wheeler was looking to find a crop that would attract ducks in Pamlico County, where he hunts. He and Al Spruill formed Tidewater Grain Co. in 2018, which markets an heirloom variety of rice referred to as Carolina Gold. While more expensive than growing corn as food for ducks, consumer demand for the rice variety is highly sought after and profitable.

Abstract:
""An heirloom rice variety catches on in North Carolina's Tidewater Region." Not new to the region, Carolina Gold was introduced long before the Revolutionary War but later migrated away into the Mississippi Delta region. Recent efforts to reintroduce the crop have been successful, particularly with Tidewater Grain Co., founded by Tommy Wheeler and Al Spruill in Pamlico County.
