Badminton NC opened last year in Raleigh with the goal of nurturing a local Olympian. Local residents can train with the goal of competing in the Olympics. Local coach Dennis Christensen was a former national coach in Sweden, Switzerland, and Italy before helping start the club and coaching youth in Raleigh. Raleigh resident Soumya Gade trains there and has been successful winning matches at several national tournaments.

Physical therapists and injured athletes who visit the Duke’s Sports Medicine Clinic talk about the effects of the fitness revolution. Exercising and playing sports carries risks for injury as can a person’s gender, physical conditioning, body size, psychological makeup, intelligence, and sporting equipment. The biggest reason for the increase in injuries is that more people are participating in sports more frequently.

The George Whitfield Hall of Fame, founded and hosted by the former baseball coach at East Carolina University, inducted its 40th class January, 2012, which included David Thompson, an NC State basketball star, Alexander Andrews, an NC State All-American, Duke wide receiver Wes Chesson, and Don Shea, former sports director at WTVD-TV in Durham.
