Abstract:

"For generations, shove poles have helped boaters navigate the shallow waters of Currituck, Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds." Also known as shoving paddles, these instruments date back to early native Americans in their navigation of the shallow sounds. Mostly made from ash wood, these poles generally range in size from 10-16 feet.
