Dueling presidential rallies for Donald Trump in Raleigh and Hillary Clinton in Charlotte on Tuesday proved that North Carolina is very important to these candidates. For Trump, North Carolina is a must-win, as there are few viable paths to 270 electoral votes without it. For Clinton, winning the state would all but guarantee her the White House.

In the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton loss in North Carolina by four points to Donald Trump. At the state level, however, Democrats had a large gubernatorial win by Roy Cooper. Democrats are left with mixed signals from North Carolina voters, and question the future of politics.

According to Paul Luebke, a University of North Carolina-Greensboro sociologist, the Democrats can beat Republicans statewide only if they specifically show how they stand on issues and how Republicans don’t.
