Abstract:
Red Oil, developed in Lexington in the 1930s, was a first aid ointment made for use on minor cuts, burns, and bug bites. The product, which is packaged only in glass bottles, has retained many loyal users over its 70-year history. The formula was developed by Cleo Everhardt and his sister, Mary Belle Everhardt Shepherd, with the help of some area pharmacists. Their company, Southern First Aid Supply Company, or So-Fas-Co, for short, was one of the earliest-known industrial safety companies.
