In 2000, North Carolina was the home to about 4,700 technology-related businesses; in 2015 there are more than 10,000 in the state, or over 16,000 when including energy, environmental, and life science technology. A resilient and diversified technology industry in North Carolina has resulted from the backing of smaller companies by larger powerhouses such as IBM and AT&T.

Even fast market sectors of technology can face down-market whims. But three North Carolina based companies--Channel Advisor (Morrisville), CommScope (Hickory), and Cree Inc. (Durham)--have faced the slumps to emerge as leaders in the technology sector by taking advantage of rapid changes, consumer patterns, network improvements, and innovative products.
