In 2006, the North Carolina Maritime Museum hosted the conclusion of the Pepsi Americas’ Sail festival, in Beaufort, NC. The festival Began with a race between the world’s largest tall ships from Brazil to the Dominican Republic. Beaufort gained the right to host the celebration when local Horatio Sinbad won the previous race in 2002.

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort preserves and displays the state's maritime history. The museum is currently expanding to a 36-acre tract on nearby Town Creek to accommodate the nearly 200,000 annual visitors.

From humble beginnings in the 1930s, the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort has grown through the efforts of curator Charles R. McNeill (1975-1988) to include educational programs, as well as preservation, restoration, and research activities.

Abstract:
The Hampton Mariner's Museum in Beaufort was an outgrowth of an idea former state legislator Roy W. Hampton had in 1952. Hampton later died, and along with a lack of state funding, the museum languished. The cause was taken up in 1975 by Charles McNeill. This article describes the museum's growth and development from that point.
